Warner Bros. Games has announced that its Harry Potter RPG Hogwarts Legacy has surpassed 40 million units sold worldwide. This remarkable achievement makes it the biggest game release in the publisher’s history and positions it among the best-selling games of all time. The game has been made available across multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
The 40 million sales figure aligns Hogwarts Legacy with other iconic franchises, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Payday 2, which have also reached similar lifetime sales. It has notably outsold several major titles, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which stands at 35.04 million, Cyberpunk 2077 at 35 million, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 36.93 million units. This commercial performance underscores the immense popularity of the Harry Potter universe beyond its origins in books and films.
Developed by Avalanche Software and published under the Portkey Games label, Hogwarts Legacy was launched in February 2023. Despite facing some pre-release controversy, the game quickly garnered a strong following. Set in the 1800s wizarding world, it allows players to assume the role of a fifth-year student at Hogwarts, where they can explore iconic locations, discover magical beasts, craft potions, and master spell casting.
The staggering sales figures all but confirm a sequel, as Warner Bros. has already indicated that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is in development. The game’s success not only reflects its well-crafted gameplay but also highlights the enduring appeal of the Harry Potter franchise. With this level of commercial triumph, it’s surprising that the title has not yet seen any downloadable content (DLC) released to expand upon its world.
As one of the biggest commercial successes of the current console generation, Hogwarts Legacy has set a high bar for future titles in the RPG genre. For those who have yet to experience the game, it is currently available for free on the Epic Games Store, which may provide an opportunity for new players to delve into the enchanting realm of Hogwarts.
