PS Plus Users Have 24 Hours to Claim Free Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge

PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers have just 24 hours to download the VR title Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge before it leaves the service on December 16.

PlayStation Plus subscribers have a limited window of approximately 24 hours to download and experience the virtual reality title, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, for free. This offer ends on December 16, and while a day may seem insufficient for a video game, this particular title boasts a completion time of around 3 to 6 hours, allowing players to finish it before the offer expires. However, only those with the Extra and Premium tiers of the subscription service can access this game for free, while Essential tier subscribers are excluded. Additionally, players without the PlayStation VR2 headset need not worry; the game is exclusively compatible with VR hardware and cannot be played using a standard controller and display.

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge was initially released in December 2020 as an Oculus Quest exclusive. It became available for PlayStation users in 2023 as part of the PS Plus Extra and Premium offerings, but it is now being removed from these libraries. Despite being a title within the iconic franchise, it has garnered mixed reception. The game holds a modest score of 73 on Metacritic, though it has performed better on the PlayStation Store, where players have rated it 4.17 out of 5 stars, reflecting a somewhat more favorable perception among users than critics.

Developed by VR studio ILMxLAB and published by Disney, the game allows players to immerse themselves in the Star Wars universe. As a Droid Repair Technician who crash-lands on Batuu, players engage in various missions, including facing off against the Guavian Death Gang and infiltrating a First Order facility. The game promises a personal journey through the expansive Star Wars lore, with the official synopsis stating, “take on missions in the Batuu wilds, face off against the Guavian Death Gang, infiltrate a First Order facility and travel to other eras in the galaxy, in your own unforgettable Star Wars story.”

While Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge is the most notable title leaving the service, it is not the only one. Another high-profile game is also set to depart from the PS Plus Extra and Premium libraries shortly. As the gaming community gears up for the end of this duo of offerings, it underscores the ever-changing landscape of subscription services, where titles come and go, often keeping players on their toes about what experiences will remain available.

Such dynamic changes in the gaming ecosystem highlight the importance of timely engagement with available content. As players rush to secure their free access to Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, it serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of digital gaming libraries and the need for vigilance among subscribers. The departure of these games from PS Plus raises questions about the future offerings and how platforms will continue to balance their libraries to attract and retain subscribers.
