Bungie’s upcoming title, Marathon, has a confirmed release window, now set to launch in March 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Initially slated for a September release, the game faced an indefinite delay after concerns related to a plagiarism issue emerged earlier this year. Following these developments, Bungie has also announced that the game will be priced at $40 upon release.

In its first year post-launch, Marathon is set to introduce additional content, including new maps and in-game events. A notable feature being added is the “shell” system, which functions similarly to character classes that players can customize through loadouts. A new shell named “Rook” has been introduced since alpha playtests; this shell enables players to join ongoing runs with a limited loadout, allowing for a lower-risk experience as they seek loot without jeopardizing more valuable items.
Bungie’s latest venture carries significant weight, especially in light of recent financial pressures. Sony Interactive Entertainment disclosed last month that Destiny 2, another title under Bungie’s banner, had not met corporate expectations, prompting a $204 million write-down of Bungie’s assets. In response to these challenges, Sony has increased its oversight of Bungie, indicating a shift towards a more integrated role within PlayStation Studios.
This year has not been without its controversies for Bungie. In May, the studio acknowledged that a former employee had plagiarized artistic work from artist Fern Hook, which was incorporated into the textures used in Marathon.
