Valve Announces Annual Chocolate Gifts for Game Developers with La Maison Du Chocolat

Cloud9 secures a stunning 3-1 victory over T1 to win the LCS Summer Split and take home $200,000 in prize money.

Valve’s Steam platform has garnered attention for its unique annual tradition of gifting luxury chocolates to select game developers. This practice recently came to light after an indie creator, known as nani_variable on Reddit, shared a photo of a beautifully packaged chocolate box and a greeting card from the Steam team. The revelation highlights an unusual yet thoughtful gesture from one of the gaming industry’s most influential companies.

Steam’s choice of confectionery comes from the prestigious chocolatier La Maison Du Chocolat. A 60-piece box carries a retail value that can exceed €93, illustrating the premium nature of these gifts. However, it is important to note that not every developer on the platform receives such offerings, even those whose games have achieved remarkable success. The selection of recipients appears to be based on specific criteria tied to financial accomplishments.

Reports suggest that the gifts are contingent upon the revenue generated by a game. For instance, developers whose games earn upwards of $600,000 annually are said to receive a package valued at approximately $300. This tiered system allows Valve to recognize developers who reach significant financial milestones with a tangible token of appreciation. As a testament to this, the creators of the popular application Wallpaper Engine noted a far more substantial gift; they received a set of chocolates weighing around 1.5 kg, valued near $700. Such generous offerings often lead developers to share some of their sweet rewards with friends or others in the industry.

The practice of gifting chocolates not only serves as an acknowledgment of developers’ hard work but also contributes to a sense of community within the gaming ecosystem. While the chocolates may appear to be a simple gesture, they underscore Valve’s commitment to fostering relationships with indie developers, who often face numerous challenges in a competitive market. This tradition stands as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and supporting creative talent behind the games that captivate millions of players worldwide.

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, gestures like these may play an increasingly vital role in maintaining positive relationships between developers and platform holders. By celebrating achievements, Valve not only encourages ongoing innovation but also reinforces the collaborative spirit that defines the industry. Going forward, it will be intriguing to see whether other platforms adopt similar practices, perhaps leading to a trend that prioritizes developer recognition and community bonding.
