Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Physical Editions Launch on Switch & Switch 2, MK4 Download Required

Digital Eclipse launches physical editions of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection for Switch, with MK4 requiring a download due to production challenges.

Digital Eclipse, the respected retro gaming studio, has partnered with Atari and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to unveil the physical editions of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Pre-orders for these editions are set to ship starting today, with the Nintendo versions featuring a game card that includes the full game data.

This comprehensive collection, developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Atari, is officially licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It gathers a significant library of the early titles from the Mortal Kombat franchise. The collection includes classic arcade games as well as home versions on platforms like Super NES, Sega Genesis, and handheld editions for Game Boy, Game Gear, Sega 32X, and Game Boy Advance. Each title in the collection has been meticulously restored and enhanced with modern features that prioritize player experience. Notably, many of the arcade and console editions come equipped with online multiplayer support utilizing rollback netcode.

The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is available in several editions. The Standard Edition, featuring the base physical game, retails for $49.99 on Nintendo Switch and $59.99 on Switch 2, available through Atari.com and major retailers. For collectors, the Deluxe Edition adds value by including the Standard Edition alongside a Steelbook case, mini marquees, magnets, a poster, a lenticular card, and arcade-themed items. This edition is priced at $69.99 for the Nintendo Switch and $79.99 for Switch 2 on Atari.com and other major outlets.

A more exclusive option is the Kollector’s Edition, designed by Limited Run Games, which includes the Standard Edition along with a Goro controller holder statue, a commemorative arcade token, a hardcover art and lore book, and a pin set, all presented in a specially numbered collector’s box. Pre-orders for this premium edition concluded on August 31.

The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection features a total of 11 classic games spanning the years from 1992 to 2003. The titles included are: Mortal Kombat (1992), Mortal Kombat II (1993), Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (1996), Mortal Kombat 4 (1997), Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero (1997), Mortal Kombat Special Forces (2000), Mortal Kombat Advance (2001), Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002), and Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition (2003).

In an update issued on December 15, Digital Eclipse clarified a critical detail regarding the physical editions. Initially, it was announced that all games would be included on the game card for the Switch and Switch 2. However, it has been revealed that Mortal Kombat 4 will require a download due to production challenges. The statement from Digital Eclipse explained that the Switch version had to be submitted for manufacturing well in advance, and Mortal Kombat 4 was not finalized in time. While this title will be available for download as part of a day-one patch, it will not be included on the physical cartridge.

As the release of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection approaches, it is evident that the enduring legacy of the franchise continues to resonate with both long-time fans and newcomers. The collection not only revitalizes these classic games but also emphasizes the importance of preserving the history of video gaming while adapting to contemporary gaming standards. With enhanced features and multiple editions catering to different audiences, the release is poised to attract significant attention in the gaming community.
