Queens School’s Gamers Dominate Esports Tournaments, Showcasing Elite Talent

Team Secret secures a stunning 3-1 victory over Fnatic in the VCT 2023 Finals, claiming a $300K prize and the championship title.

In an era where traditional sports might dominate the headlines, a high school in Queens has made its mark by winning both state and national championships in competitive video gaming. At Health, Arts, Robotics, and Technology High School (HARTs) in Cambria Heights, approximately 40 students have found success in a program that emphasizes not only gameplay but also critical skills in technology and teamwork.

The esports program at HARTs has gained traction since its inception in the spring of 2025, blending interests in computer science and software engineering with competitive gaming. Students like junior Amare McDonald, who cites “Marvel Rivals” and “Fortnite” as his favorites, represent a new generation of athletes who excel without ever stepping foot on a traditional sports field. Coaches emphasize the importance of rigorous practice schedules, with players dedicating three hours a day, Monday through Friday, to hone their skills.

Jordan Jean, a robotics teacher and the esports coach, oversees the program, which includes varsity, junior varsity, and club teams. “We have them practicing Monday through Friday, three hours a day,” Jean noted, underscoring the program’s commitment to developing players. This structured approach has proven effective, culminating in their recent triumphs in state and national competitions.

Within the state-of-the-art facility, students are encouraged to pursue technical skills alongside their gaming passion. Freshman Ayden Hanif expressed his aspirations of becoming an electrical engineer, highlighting how the program combines fun with valuable educational experiences. “It’s a fun class that we take. Not a lot of high schools are going to have the opportunity to do all of this,” he said.

Principal Kayode Ayetiwa stressed the significance of esports in connecting students with scholarship opportunities, emphasizing that gaming is a natural fit for students who are often already engaged in gaming culture. This integration into the educational framework has sparked interest among students, contributing to increased enrollment and engagement, as noted by assistant principal Anna Raghubir. “There is a buzz about what’s happening here in Cambria Heights,” she said.

Critics have raised concerns about the potential downsides of increased screen time, warning that it could detract from academics and social development. However, educators at HARTs argue that balance is key. Game design teacher Errol Davis pointed out that the program not only teaches technical skills but also cultivates soft skills like teamwork and communication, essential attributes in today’s collaborative work environments.

Initially, some parents were skeptical about the value of an esports program. Shari Duncan, a parent, reflected on her uncertainty before witnessing her son’s transformation. “I was very skeptical at first,” she said, acknowledging the growth she observed in her child. Duncan noted that her son had developed tight bonds with his teammates, illustrating the community aspect that esports fosters. “They are a team. They all move together inside and outside of esports,” she remarked.

The impact of this program extends beyond gaming achievements. Senior Jahiem Prescod shared his personal journey, stating, “At first, I was a very quiet person. I never used to want to talk to anyone. But this year, when esports started, I was speaking to almost everyone.” Fellow student Amare McDonald echoed this sentiment, saying, “It’s basically helping me uplift myself and bring everybody up with me.” The growth of esports at HARTs illustrates how competitive gaming can not only serve as a pathway to success in tournaments but also foster personal development and community spirit among students.

As the esports movement continues to expand across schools in the United States, HARTs stands as a testament to the potential of blending education with entertainment. The program’s achievements signal a promising future for competitive gaming within academic institutions, suggesting that esports may soon become a staple in the educational landscape.
