Alabama is set to face off against Yale in its final nonconference game of the season on Monday night in Tuscaloosa. However, the Crimson Tide will be missing star point guard Labaron Philon, who is sidelined due to a minor injury, as confirmed by head coach Nate Oats. The team is optimistic that the injury is not serious.
“Alabama star guard Labaron Philon is out tonight against Yale with a minor thigh/groin injury, Crimson Tide coach Nate Oats told @thefieldof68,” reported Jeff Goodman via X. Philon has been an instrumental player for Alabama this season, averaging 21.9 points per game. Oats expressed hope that Philon will return in time for the upcoming Saturday game against Kentucky.
Philon, who surprised many by returning to college basketball instead of declaring for the 2025 NBA Draft, has been a standout performer, significantly improving his game under Oats’ coaching. In 11 games this season, he has not only averaged nearly 22 points per game, placing him eighth in the nation for scoring and first in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), but he also contributes with 3.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game.
In the absence of Philon, Oats will need to find a suitable replacement for point guard duties. Aden Holloway is expected to step in as the most natural substitute, with Latrell Wrightsell also likely to see increased responsibilities. The team boasts several capable ball handlers, providing options for Alabama as they navigate this crucial stretch of the season.
Alabama hoping to get Labaron Philon back for SEC play
With the SEC appearing slightly less competitive than in previous years, Alabama is well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunity. Since Oats took the helm, the Crimson Tide has captured multiple conference titles, both in the regular season and during the SEC Tournament. With the potential for further success this season, Alabama is keen on maintaining its momentum.
This Saturday, Alabama will enter a challenging match against Kentucky, a game that carries significant narrative weight beyond mere rivalry. Notably, Mo Dioubate will be facing his former team, which adds an intriguing subplot to the matchup. Additionally, Kentucky’s Mark Pope may be seeking redemption after suffering three consecutive losses to Oats last year.
The schedule does not become easier following the game against the Wildcats, as Alabama will travel to Nashville to take on the SEC’s highest-ranked team in the latest AP poll, the Vanderbilt Commodores. For Alabama to achieve favorable outcomes in these pivotal games, the quick recovery of Philon will be crucial. Fortunately, according to Goodman, Oats remains optimistic about Philon’s return from the thigh and groin injury.
