Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has officially landed on PlayStation 5, just in time for its first anniversary since the initial release on PC and Xbox Series X/S. This transition to Sony’s console allows a new audience to experience a game that has captivated aviation enthusiasts and casual players alike since its launch.
Although my own experience with the game had been limited, I was eager to explore how Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 performs with a PS5 controller, particularly considering its reputation for offering an immersive flying experience. Friends had previously demonstrated the game using a complete home setup, including a joystick, so my expectations were high for how well the console controller would replicate that sensation.
For newcomers like myself, diving directly into gameplay can be overwhelming. I quickly discovered that completing the training modules is essential. The game is packed with content, and understanding its mechanics transforms the experience from confusing to truly enjoyable. Initially, I found myself struggling to grasp the enjoyment of flying, but after dedicating time to the training, I began to appreciate the myriad features available. Starting with “All Assists On” was also a valuable tip for those new to the game.
While Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 retains many of the features from its predecessors, the PS5 version introduces specific enhancements that leverage the capabilities of the DualSense controller. The Adaptive Triggers create a dynamic sensation of tension based on the player’s flight, while Gyro Controls enable users to maneuver the plane by physically tilting the controller. Additionally, the Lightbar Support mimics an aircraft’s annunciator panel, offering visual cues, and the customizable touchpad allows for throttle control with a simple swipe. The controller speaker further enhances immersion by relaying audio from air traffic control, adding realism to the simulated cockpit environment.
Initially, the shift from joystick to controller felt disorienting. However, the DualSense features significantly aid in crafting an authentic flying experience, making it easy to forget that I was using a standard game controller. The Gyro Controls, in particular, provided a similar sensation to actual flight, allowing me to feel as though I was gliding through the air.
The beauty of Microsoft Flight Simulator lies in its capacity to offer countless hours of gameplay. Players can explore a stunningly realistic representation of the world, an experience that would have seemed far-fetched just a few years ago. While the game allows for virtually seamless travel across the globe, a few minor glitches, including graphic rendering issues, can detract from the immersion, though they have not significantly impacted my overall gameplay thus far.
As a result, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 proves to be an exceptional title for both aviation enthusiasts and those curious about flight simulation. The game effectively combines realism with accessibility, making it appealing to a wide audience. With enjoyable features that take advantage of the PS5’s capabilities, it presents a unique opportunity for players to step into the cockpit and experience the thrill of flight from the comfort of their own homes.
